The Robertson Family: Piloting Tech Support for Seniors at the Food Pantry

The Robertson Family, longtime residents of the Richmond District, wanted to make a difference in their community. While many families volunteer in traditional ways, they saw a unique opportunity to support their neighbors in a different way—through technology.  Seeing a need for digital assistance, they piloted a tech support project at The Richmond Neighborhood Center’s Food Pantry, helping seniors with questions and tasks on their phones while they waited for food assistance.

From adjusting phone settings to guiding them through simple edits, the family provided patient, hands-on support. Inspired by their own experience helping their grandmother, the Robertson daughters—students at Burke’s, a school that partners with The Richmond Neighborhood Center—understood how essential phones can be for seniors, especially those without family nearby. This act of service wasn’t new for these kids as they’ve volunteered with us many times with their school.

Their initiative proved that this type of support was truly needed, as many seniors expressed gratitude for the help. Sometimes, a little digital guidance can make a big impact, ensuring our neighbors stay connected and empowered.

Thank you, Robertson Family, for recognizing a need and stepping up to fill it! Your kindness and community spirit inspire us all.
