Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, San Francisco public schools remain closed. To learn more about the Neighborhood Center’s virtual programming for Rosevelt Middle School students this fall, please contact Beacon Director Cass Terry or Program Manager Bessie Natareno using the information below.
Registration for Fall 2020 is now open!
Middle School Beacon Programs are free for the 2020-2021 school year.
The Richmond Neighborhood Center began Beacon programming at Roosevelt Middle School in 2003. Beacon offers a fully comprehensive after school program from dismissal until 6:30PM on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays, and 6PM on Wednesdays and Fridays at the school site.
After School Academies
This program provides youth an opportunity to engage in content-rich activities and project-based learning. Academies begin right after school in their assigned classroom and run until youth leave or are picked up. Youth will receive a special snack, program-wide announcements, “family supper,” field trips, cooking projects and individualized academic support. Academy participants host family nights and participate in culminating presentations.
Academies run Monday-Friday and youth can apply to switch into and out of Academies each grading period.
Academies include:
- Culture & Identity Academy
This academy offers a hands-on ethnic studies curriculum with cross content project-based learning activities including field trips across SF’s diverse neighborhoods, identity exploration activities and family history presentations.
- STEAM Academy
This academy offers science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics activities including weekly eco-exploration trips, robotics team competitions, coding workshops and media arts projects.
- Culinary Academy
This academy offers a culinary arts curriculum with cooking and artisan food production activities like recipe experiments, edible art projects, garden stewardship and family cookbook creation.
- Sports Academy
This academy offers team sports and physical activity options including city-wide league basketball and flag football, as well as silly schoolyard game remixes, tournaments and nutrition/fitness activities.
- 8th Grade Teen Center
This academy is exclusively for 8th graders and offers youth-led projects/tournaments, service learning activities, and the opportunity to be matched with pre-screened mentors at a local tech company and participate in leadership activities to earn a stipend.
After School Anchor Program
This program is designed for students who cannot participate in Academies for three or more days because parents are picking up, or expecting their child home before 4:30pm. With our partners at the Japanese Community Youth Council, we offer a snack, community circle and a homework lab.
