Celebrating AAPI Heritage Month: Volunteer Spotlight: Qing

Celebrating AAPI Heritage Month at The Richmond Neighborhood Center

Originally from China, Qing moved to the United States 16 years ago to look after a family member. Also in search of a better life, she was drawn by the peaceful environment and pleasant weather, she found her home in San Francisco’s Richmond District. Today, she’s one of our most dedicated and warm-hearted volunteers.

Qing first came to The Richmond Neighborhood Center as a participant at the food pantry. Inspired by the community she found here, she soon began volunteering—and hasn’t looked back since. “I love seeing people happy—it makes me happy too,” she says with a smile.

Over the years, Qing Mei has witnessed the pantry grow into a more efficient and organized operation. She takes great pride in being part of that evolution, helping ensure that families in need receive support with dignity and care.

Beyond the pantry shelves, Qing Mei’s presence brings friendship and connection. She cherishes the bonds she’s formed with fellow volunteers, many of whom she now meets regularly for lunch or afternoon chats. “It’s not just about helping—it’s also about friendship and fun.”

With children and grandchildren living in Canada and Australia, Qing Mei has built a local family of her own right here in the Richmond.

We are so grateful for her years of kindness, consistency, and compassion. Thank you, Qing, for everything you do!
