Volunteer Spotlight: Vickie

Vickie, originally from Malaysia, began her journey into community service alongside her daughter, who needed to complete community service work for school. Initially, Vickie came along just to check it out, but she quickly became involved in setting up the food pantry at The Richmond Neighborhood Center. At the time, the food pantry was smaller, and Vickie was surprised by how much work went into making it run. Over the years, the pantry has grown significantly, driven by an increasing need for food in the community.

Vickie, a former stay-at-home mom, has enjoyed being part of a close-knit group of volunteers who support and help one another. She finds fulfillment in contributing to the larger community and appreciates the collaborative spirit of The Richmond Neighborhood Center, where volunteers and staff work together on various initiatives, from the food pantry to afterschool programs and other community efforts across the Richmond District. She volunteers 4 days a week!

Her advice to anyone considering volunteering is simple: ”If you have the time, it’s a great opportunity to connect with others and make a difference. It’s a place where you’ll find people who care, and you get to help in so many different ways.”

Vickie continues to be an essential part of The Richmond Neighborhood Center’s work, fostering community connections and making a positive impact in her neighborhood.
